It happened in Freeport along Interstate 295 near the Brunswick town line. An apparent suicide attempt in which a man shot himself three times in the head with a flare gun while he was in his pick-up truck, and subsequently a small fire broke out in the cab of the truck, which was put out by passersby. A fire extinguisher was used and the passersby pulled the man from the truck.
The man is now at Maine Medical Center in Portland in serious condition, but his name has not yet been released.
State police note that this truck was fueled by propane and if the fire had spread it could have been a very serious incident.
