04 Jan Fatal Accident Discovered in Gardiner

State police are investigating the discovery of a fatal accident along I-295 in Gardiner–an accident that may have happened a week ago. 27-year-old Ian Carter of Lincoln Avenue in Gardiner was found dead inside a vehicle that went off the road into the median near the Route 201 exit, became airborne and struck a tree–some 25 feet off the ground. The car then came to rest down a steep embankment and was discovered by a passerby in the southbound lane, who saw a reflection off the car in the woods.
Troopers say Carter was last seen leaving work in southern Maine on Monday and that no one reported him missing. Since the crash took place off the northbound lane near the Route 201 exit, troopers theorize that the crash may have taken place as Carter was driving home.
